Why "Kansas Fish Finder"?
Modernizing public fishing reports for Kansas anglers
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) provides valuable and accurate fishing reports generated directly by district fisheries and biologists. However, accessing this data often requires navigating multiple nested HTML tables across dozens of web pages.
Kansas Fish Finder was created to solve this by automatically ingesting public KDWP report updates into a lightweight SQLite database hosted on a custom home server setup. By exposing clean FastAPI endpoints and visualizing metrics with Chart.js, anglers can instantly spot top-performing waters across the state in seconds.
I started this project after returing again and again to the KDWP fishing report tables only to be frustrated by the ability to figure out what kind of fish were swimming in a certain water and what were the probabilities of catching them! After creating my own script to scrape and process the HTML data I figured, why not let everyone else see this too? Hence, Kansas Fish Finder was born.

Summarized on a scale of 1 (Poor) to 4 (Excellent). Takes into account catch rates, fish health, water clarity, and seasonal accessibility for shore and boat anglers.
Density Rating
Reflects the total quantity or population density of a species per surface acre. High density ratings mean frequent bites and higher catch-per-hour rates.
Preferred & Lunker Rating
Indicates the relative abundance of keeper-sized and trophy-class fish. A lake with a moderate density but high Lunker rating is ideal for target-seeking trophy anglers.

Specific lure colors, live bait choices, structure types (brush piles, rock ledges, flats), and seasonal depth zones recommended directly by assigned lake biologists.
